Despite the ongoing pandemic challenges, the Big Picture team was able to create a moving assembly for the entire school, and an engaging learning experience for my class. Students were given real agency in choosing video clips to share with the school, and in leading a follow-up panel discussion. In a school year filled with lots of memorable moments, students invariably recount this as the highlight of the year.
Doug Litowitz, The Pomfret School
This was by far the most powerful PD I’ve done in the last 2 years of teaching in the classroom.
Tyler Bage, Middle School Teacher,
Working with Big Picture Educational to bring conversations to our community has done far more than I hoped in terms of bringing awareness to the issues and the need for reform. The support, guidance, expertise, and connections to speakers that Big Picture provides creates a buzz that helps our tiny program create extraordinary events.
Deb Conrad, Western Nevada College
We’ve worked with Big Picture for several years. They have brought great films and resources to our conferences, providing classroom-ready materials that help our thousands of teachers build lessons around the films. They understand the education world, know the language teachers speak, and know what educators want and need.
David Bailor, Director of Meetings and Exhibits, National Council for the Social Studies
BPEC’s work in education and outreach creates partnerships and opportunities that engage thousands of students around the important civic issues of today. Their excellent assessment and evaluation efforts also provide the substantive data needed to showcase the great success and impact of their projects.
Hannah Gregg, Impact Producer, Vulcan Productions
Last night’s panel discussion was a powerful tool for the county’s programs around youth violence prevention, mental health, substance misuse and education. Using the film and the BPEC guide with our youth, gives us options for learning that help us reach them in a way we never thought possible.

We created a Community Discussion Guide to help audiences process the difficult content represented in the film. Our goal is to encourage conversation, create understanding, and reveal history’s powerful lessons by engaging educators, families, film clubs, and other community groups.
Our unique focus on the tradition of slave resistance reveals new insights not often highlighted in traditional textbooks about American history. The discussion prompts explore all aspects of the film with a concentration on the many forms of resistance that took place, and their implications on contemporary society.
We joined the team to create an Educational Discussion Guide to accompany the film because the filmmakers wanted to extend the reach of the film after broadcast.
Rather than focus just on the biographical aspect of the film, we chose to explore the importance of ethics and analytical thinking in the study of mathematics and economics, through the lens of Buffet’s unique life experience.
Our role on the CBB team was to build on the work they did during broadcast and extend the impact and engagement cycle of their film. We created an in-depth Educational Resource Guide that highlighted the stories in the film and aligned with subject area, national, and state learning standards, and integrated these units into the PBS Learning Media platform. We spearheaded a years-long campaign with state, local, and national organizations to start a national conversation about criminal justice and educational policy reform.
